Statistic: Medical Assistance (MA) will be the largest of many states' widely funded heath care treatment programs. It offered coverage for a monthly average of 733,000 low-earnings people in state fiscal year 2012. Three-fourths of these were children and families, pregnant women and parents without children. The others have been people 65 or older and people who have ailments. Adults without children with incomes within or below 75 percent of hardship became entitled to MA in March 2011.
Most enrolls have their health care through health plans. The rest get care using a fee-for-service basis, with providers billing the state directly for professional services provided.
